Announcement

The Seventh Anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 'Women, Peace, and Security'

Today, Women are the primary victims of war - 80% of the civilian victims of war are women and 80% of refugees and displaced people throughout the world are women and children. However, women are not only passive victims. They work to build new policies of peace and security centered on human needs. The right to be included in numerous societal processes is often ignored. Women are often excluded from peace negotiations. Working groups for women and international peace and security, led a campaign which resulted in the unanimous adoption of Resolution 1325 in 2000, which included women in peace negotiations at the highest level for the first time in history.

In 2005 on the fifth anniversary of Resolution 1325, Women in Black - Belgrade delivered to the Assembly of Serbia a Resolution entitled ‘Women, Peace, and Security.’ The Assembly did not respond, so the request was repeated in 2006. They have not yet responded.

Respect for international standards and conventions is one of the ways for Serbia to actively include itself in the international community, but refusing to implement an important document like Resolution 1325 shows that Serbia is still not ready to start down the path of democratization, reconciliation, and creating a lasting peace.

- Stasa Zajovic, Coordinator of Women in Black
- Biljana Kovacevic Vuco, President of Yucom (The Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights)
- Maja Pesic, Marina Nikolic, Nadja Duhacek, and Nevena Kostic, civil society activists

Also to mark the anniversary of Resolution 1325, we will hold a performance on the same day entitled ‘We are Secure when We Can Choose’ at Andricev Venac at 1pm. We will also deliver demands to The Serbian Assembly at 1:30pm.
