This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide - the most massive crime committed in the territory of Europe after World War II.
On July 11th 1995, the armed formation of Republika Srpska, headed by the Hague indictee Ratko Mladic, occupied Srebrenica, a safe haven under UN protection. The regime of S. Milosevic provided complete military, logistic, financial and political support to this genocidal undertaking. According to official data, 8,372 persons of Bosnian nationality were killed, while families are claiming around 10,000 of their members.
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, on every 11th of the month, peace organizations and art troupes from Serbia, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Montenegro will organize a number of activities in Belgrade, Sarajevo, Kotor, as well as in other cities in Serbia, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Montenegro. The first in a series of activities, on 11th February, will be a visit by activists of Women in Black and the Association for Social Research and Communications to the Memorial Center in Potočari, together with the women of Srebrenica.
The activities will be organized in order to:
- express our compassion, solidarity and responsibility towards the victims of the Srebrenica genocide;
- draw attention to the fact that in our countries' public, the Srebrenica genocide is largely disclaimed, or minimized;
- remind of the fact that in the above mentioned three countries have not as yet proclaimed a Commemoration Day of the Srebrenica genocide, as it was suggested by the European Parliament, and reiterate the request that July 11th be proclaimed Commemoration Day of the Srebrenica Genocide
- encourage our societies to affirm a culture of compassion and solidarity.
